Major Retailer Joins University Plaza
Seattle-based fashion retailer Nordstrom, Inc. has officially announced plans to bring its off-price retail division to North Alabama. A new Nordstrom Rack is scheduled to open in Huntsville in the spring of 2027. The upcoming 24,000-square-foot storefront will be situated in University Plaza, a highly frequented shopping center currently anchored by Best Buy. The retail property is strategically positioned off University Drive and Enterprise Way, an area recognized for its high commercial visibility and traffic.
The University Plaza shopping center is owned by Montana Property Group, a New York City-based privately held real estate investment firm, and is leased and managed by Colliers International. Miro Sutton, managing partner of Montana Property Group, stated that securing a brand of this caliber has been a long time coming for the North Alabama region. Sutton described the retailer's arrival as a marquee addition to the shopping center and a strong indicator of Huntsville's upward economic trajectory.
Store Features and Consumer Experience
Gemma Lionello, president of Nordstrom Rack, expressed enthusiasm about the company's expansion into the growing Huntsville market. The company aims to introduce new consumers to the Nordstrom experience while serving the local community with an expansive offering of recognized brands at great prices. Nordstrom Rack currently stands as the largest source of new customers for the broader Nordstrom portfolio.
The new location promises to deliver a comprehensive retail experience tailored to value-conscious shoppers. Customers will have access to on-trend apparel, shoes, accessories, beauty products, and home decor at discounts of up to 70 percent. These goods are sourced from many of the premium brands traditionally sold at full-line Nordstrom stores. Furthermore, Lionello noted that the Huntsville location will provide core conveniences, including seamless online order pickup for purchases made on both Nordstrom.com and NordstromRack.com, alongside streamlined return services.
Statewide Economic Impact
This commercial development represents a notable expansion of Nordstrom's physical footprint and overall economic impact within the state of Alabama. At present, the company operates only one other Nordstrom Rack store in the state, which is responsible for generating over 35 jobs statewide. The addition of the Huntsville location aligns with broader commercial growth trends in the city, providing a fresh retail anchor for University Plaza and promising new employment opportunities and increased local commerce as the spring 2027 opening approaches.
