Huntsville Hospital Health System broke ground October 21, 2026, on the $30 million North Huntsville Freestanding Emergency Department, a 24-hour emergency facility on Memorial Parkway scheduled for completion in December 2027, according to an announcement from general contractor Robins & Morton.
The North Huntsville emergency department is the largest healthcare investment ever made in North Huntsville, according to the Robins & Morton announcement, which did not state the basis for that comparison. The facility will serve North Huntsville, Meridianville and Hazel Green. HH Health is building a second freestanding emergency department in Hampton Cove, where it plans to break ground November 4, according to 256 Today.

What Will the North Huntsville Emergency Department Offer?
The North Huntsville Freestanding Emergency Department will provide emergency care 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and will be staffed by board-certified physicians, according to the Robins & Morton announcement. The facility will include CT and ultrasound imaging, on-site laboratory services and a helipad.
The North Huntsville facility is freestanding rather than part of a hospital. Patients who need hospitalization or more specialized care can be transferred to an appropriate hospital for continued treatment, the announcement said. The announcement did not name which HH Health hospitals will receive those transfers.
Tracy Doughty, executive vice president of Madison County operations for HH Health, gave one volume estimate. “This will see probably about 40,000 patients a year when it gets busy,” Doughty told WAFF at the groundbreaking.
The Robins & Morton announcement did not state the North Huntsville facility’s square footage, its number of treatment rooms, the number of employees it will need or a date for seeing its first patients. December 2027 is the scheduled construction completion date.
Why HH Health Says North Huntsville Needs Emergency Care
Tracy Doughty tied the project to population growth. “North Huntsville is growing, and this is an important step in making sure emergency services keep pace with the community,” Doughty said in the announcement. “We’re bringing the resources and expertise of Huntsville Hospital closer to the patients and families who depend on us.”
Mitch Coley, division manager for Robins & Morton, said in the announcement that the North Huntsville facility “will expand access to emergency care, strengthen the region’s healthcare infrastructure, and help ensure patients receive timely, high-quality care closer to home.”
Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle said at the groundbreaking that “having emergency care close to home gives families peace of mind and makes our neighborhoods stronger,” according to 256 Today. Michelle Watkins, who represents District 1 on the Huntsville City Council, told WAFF, “When someone is experiencing a medical emergency, we know that every minute matters.”
How the Freestanding Emergency Department Plan Developed
Huntsville Hospital Health System announced plans for freestanding emergency departments in North Huntsville and Hampton Cove on July 14, 2025, WAFF and 256 Today reported. The system had sent a letter of intent to the State of Alabama, said it would apply for a Certificate of Need, and estimated each facility at about $30 million including construction and equipment.
Jeff Samz, president and CEO of Huntsville Hospital Health System, said at the time that the North Huntsville investment “will be the largest ever made there,” according to 256 Today. The sources reviewed for this article do not state when the state approved the Certificate of Need.
The Huntsville Planning Commission approved both freestanding emergency departments, WAFF reported September 22, 2026. Architect Martin Sisson told WAFF the approval covered the sites and final building designs, and that construction alone would cost about $25 million per facility, excluding equipment and operating costs.
The emergency departments follow HH Health’s acquisition of Crestwood Medical Center from Community Health Systems for $450 million, a deal WAFF reported in January 2026. The deal closed in March 2026 and brought the system to 15 hospitals across a 15-county region, according to 256 Today.
Robins & Morton, a privately held construction firm based in Birmingham with an office in Huntsville led by Coley, is also building HH Health’s $14 million Lawrence Medical Center outpatient facility in Moulton, which broke ground September 28, 2026, according to Robins & Morton. Chapman Sisson Architects designed that project as well.
What This Means for North Alabama
The North Huntsville emergency department site sits near North Village Town Center, a planned $240 million retail development at Bob Wade Lane and Memorial Parkway. The City of Huntsville sold land there to Super Target, Home Depot and Express Oil Change in November 2025, Axios Huntsville reported, and WAFF described the hospital site as part of the North Village development.
The North Huntsville and Hampton Cove facilities extend HH Health’s emergency care beyond its hospital campuses. The Robins & Morton announcement did not state the size of the construction workforce or the facility’s permanent staffing, and HH Health has not published a patient-volume projection beyond Doughty’s estimate to WAFF. Those figures would be needed to measure the facility’s effect on North Huntsville employment.
