MADISON, AL - In the rapidly evolving landscape of North Alabama, few local enterprises have maintained the staying power of the Madison Golf Center. Located just minutes from the tech-heavy corridors of Research Park and the industrial pulse of the Redstone Arsenal, this family-owned facility has transformed from a personal passion project into a cornerstone of the regional sports economy. Founded in 1990, the center has witnessed the surrounding cotton fields of Madison County give way to the sprawling infrastructure of Town Madison and the I-565 corridor, yet it remains a "tentpole" in the community through a blend of strategic foresight and personal service.

A Father’s Vision Rooted in the Rocket City’s Tech Boom

The story of the Madison Golf Center is inextricably linked to the early technological boom of Huntsville. The facility was established by a founder of M&S Computing, the firm that eventually became the industry giant Intergraph. As a Vice President at Intergraph, the founder's initial motivation for building the center was rooted in a practical desire for accessibility during his frequent business travels. Jennie Taylor, co-owner of the center, notes that her father wanted to solve a logistical hurdle for his own game while building for the future.

"By building the Golf Center next to Intergraph, he could have an office there and hit balls whenever he wanted," Jennie explains, adding that he also intended to "build a business he could pass down to my brother and I". Today, even as a consultant, the founder remains active in the business he started over three decades ago. "He's still very involved and often reminds us how proud he is, while also pointing out where we can improve," says Jennie.

Passing the Putter: The Transition to a Second-Generation Business

In 1996, the management of the center officially transitioned to the next generation, though the shift was more of a "legal formality" than an operational shock. Siblings Jennie and Jimmy Taylor had already been managing the daily rhythm of the facility and continued to lean on their father’s office at the center for guidance for many years. This period solidified the organizational structure that keeps the business balanced: Jennie manages the financial and employee side, while Jimmy serves as the Head Golf Instructor.

"Working with family takes mutual respect, but it works because we each focus on what we do best," Jennie says. While she handles the budgeting and operations, Jimmy focuses on his role as the face of the business and instructor. This partnership ensures that major decisions are made collaboratively, allowing the center to maintain its "business vs. craft" balance.

Competitive Resilience and the "Topgolf Effect"

The survival of independent sports facilities is often challenged by the entry of large-scale corporate competitors, but Madison Golf Center has leveraged the growth of the Huntsville market to its advantage. When Topgolf opened in Huntsville in 2017, the Taylors initially felt concerned. However, the presence of a national chain actually served as a lead generator for their traditional practice facility.

Jennie reflects on this period, stating that the competition "introduced golf to new audiences, and our business nearly doubled over the next two years". The center’s location—highly visible from I-565 and situated near the airport and Research Park—has made it a prime destination for "lunch break" golfers and after-work networking sessions. Jimmy Taylor observes that "when you stay in a location long enough, new growth surrounds you," and the development of Town Madison has only further "solidified us as a tentpole in our community".

Professional Instruction and the Future of the 2026 Season

As North Alabama continues to see an influx of younger professionals and families, the profile of the typical golfer is shifting. Jimmy Taylor reports seeing a surge in younger athletes taking up the sport, noting that youth participation is currently the fastest-growing demographic at the center. He approaches his instructional role with a philosophy of personal connection, stating, "I see teaching as a privilege and take time to understand each student, their goals and any limitations".

To ensure year-round viability, the center has recently integrated new technologies and partnerships. In March 2026, the center launched a partnership with OnPar Sim Club, an indoor simulator business owned by James Taylor. This expansion allows the facility to offer swing analysis and indoor lessons during the traditionally slower months from November through February. Combined with the on-site Professional Golf Shop run by Cindy Parrish—which offers personalized club fitting and a "try before you buy" demo bucket—the Madison Golf Center remains a comprehensive hub for the modern golfer. "We love our customers and they love us," Jennie says, attributing 30-plus years of success to treating every visitor like family.
