Huntsville Chamber Resolves Website Malware Issue: Security Update

The Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce swiftly addressed a critical security issue on its website, hsvchamber.org, after members reported encountering suspicious pop-up Captcha windows. These unauthorized prompts, which appeared to some users as a verification step, were confirmed to be malware and not part of the Chamber’s official website functionality, according to an email from President & CEO Chip Cherry.

What Happened with the Huntsville Chamber Website?

Several Chamber members noticed unexpected Captcha pop-ups while navigating hsvchamber.org. These prompts asked users to click “I’m not a robot,” only to trigger additional unwanted messages on their screens. The Chamber clarified that it does not use pop-up Captcha forms on its website. After a thorough investigation with their website support provider, the Chamber identified the malware and deployed a security patch on the afternoon of the incident, effectively resolving the issue.

The Chamber does utilize ReCAPTCHA on its contact forms, located at the bottom of various department pages, but these are distinctly different from the malicious pop-ups and are not intrusive.
