HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — In a historic economic development announcement for North Alabama, Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) revealed plans today to invest more than $6 billion to construct a state-of-the-art pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in the Huntsville portion of Limestone County.
The investment marks the largest initial capital commitment in Alabama’s history and further cements the region’s status as a burgeoning hub for the biosciences and advanced manufacturing sectors.
Expanding Domestic Production
The new facility will be located at the Greenbrier South site, a strategic industrial corridor in Limestone County. Lilly plans to utilize the campus for the domestic production of small molecule synthetic and peptide medicines. Specifically, the site will focus on manufacturing oral GLP-1 medicines, a class of drugs increasingly vital for the treatment of diabetes and obesity.
This announcement represents the third of four new U.S. sites Lilly has planned, bringing the company’s total capital expansion commitments in the United States to more than $50 billion since 2020. Construction on the Huntsville site is slated to begin in 2026.
Economic Impact and Workforce Analysis
Once fully operational, the facility is expected to create 450 high-value jobs. The roles will span a variety of technical disciplines, including engineers, scientists, operations personnel, and lab technicians.

For the Huntsville Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), this project reinforces a trend of high-tech industrial growth. The site selection process was highly competitive, with the Greenbrier South location chosen from more than 300 applicants.
From a labor market perspective, Limestone County offers a rapidly expanding workforce to support such a large-scale operation. According to recent economic data, Limestone County has consistently ranked as one of the fastest-growing counties in Alabama. As of recent Census Bureau estimates, the county’s demographic composition—approximately 73.5% White, 12.6% Black or African American, and roughly 7.2% Hispanic or Latino—reflects a diverse and growing population base that has expanded by nearly 15% since 2020.
The influx of 450 permanent positions, coupled with the anticipated construction activity starting in 2026, is expected to generate significant secondary economic benefits for the region.
Regional Leadership Reaction
State and local officials hailed the announcement as a testament to Alabama’s pro-business environment and skilled workforce.
“Huntsville and our entire state have a proven legacy of innovation, and there is no better home for Lilly than right here in Alabama,” said Governor Kay Ivey. “We are proud to welcome Lilly’s new U.S. manufacturing facility, which we are thrilled is the largest initial investment in our state’s history”.
Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle emphasized the long-term confidence the investment places in the local community. “Eli Lilly’s decision to invest $6 billion in a next-generation pharmaceutical manufacturing facility here in Huntsville is a tremendous vote of confidence in our people and our future,” Battle said.
Limestone County Commission Chairman Collin Daly noted the generational impact of the project. “The jobs and investment that Lilly is making in Limestone County will have a positive impact for generations of our residents,” Daly said.
A Hub for Biotech Innovation
The decision to locate in Huntsville was supported by the region’s existing biotechnology ecosystem. Lucia Cape, Senior VP of Economic Development & Workforce for the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber, highlighted the collaborative effort involved.
“Today’s announcement is the result of years of preparation in our life sciences sector with our partners at the City, the State, HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, our schools and universities, and the community as a whole,” Cape stated.
Jeff Samz, CEO of Huntsville Hospital Health System and 2025 Chair of the Chamber’s Board, added that the region’s quality of life and talent pool remain key drivers for corporate location decisions. “Huntsville is proud to welcome Lilly to our innovative community,” Samz said.
