Madison County to Host 2027 PDGA Amateur Disc Golf World Championships

Madison County, Alabama, will host the 2027 PDGA Amateur Disc Golf World Championships, marking the third time the area has welcomed a world-class disc golf event. The tournament, organized by the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA), will take place across four local courses: John Hunt Park and Mastin Lake in Huntsville, Sunshine Oaks in Madison, and Sharon Johnston Park in New Market. These courses have either been newly constructed or recently updated to meet the standards required for modern disc golf competitions.
This will be the first time in over 30 years that Madison County hosts a disc golf world championship, having previously held the PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships in 1983 and 1993. The region has a rich history in the sport, being home to two PDGA Hall of Fame members: Tom Monroe, an eight-time PDGA Masters 50+ world champion, and Lavone Wolfe, a renowned disc golf course designer who designed the courses that will be used for the 2027 event.
The tournament is expected to draw more than 450 competitors for a week of competition and related activities. It is projected to generate over 2,500 hotel room nights and contribute an estimated $2.1 million to the local economy. The event will be based at John Hunt Park, which will host the final round and feature a special tournament-specific setup.
The successful bid to host the championships was the result of collaboration among local organizations, including the Huntsville Sports Commission, the Huntsville/Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the Rocket City Chain Gang, a local disc golf association. Larry Burge, a local PDGA professional, has been appointed as the tournament director.
The 2027 PDGA Amateur Disc Golf World Championships will solidify Madison County’s reputation as a hub for disc golf and provide a platform to celebrate the sport’s growth and community impact. The event will showcase the area’s commitment to the sport and its ability to host large-scale competitions, while also providing an economic boost to the region.
