Food City Expands into Huntsville’s Competitive Grocery Market with Three New Stores
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Food City has revealed opening timelines for its first three stores in Huntsville, entering a highly competitive grocery market that includes major players like Whole Foods, Fresh Market, Walmart, Publix, and Aldi.
The first location at 10210 North Memorial Parkway is set to open in mid-to-late April. The company will host hiring events on March 11-12, March 17-18, and March 24-25 at Faith Chapel on Pulaski Pike, aiming to fill over 150 positions.
The Governors Drive location, near Stovehouse, is scheduled to open in early June, while the Old Gurley Road NE store is planned for early summer. The North Memorial and Old Gurley Road stores will exceed 50,000 square feet, featuring full-service meat and seafood departments, a hot food bar, floral boutique, pharmacy, Starbucks cafe, and gas station. The Stovehouse location, part of "The Foundry" mixed-use development, will be smaller.
Food City’s expansion comes as Huntsville’s grocery sector continues to grow, with established competitors like Walmart, Publix, and Aldi already serving the area, alongside premium options such as Whole Foods and Fresh Market. The Virginia-based chain, which operates over 150 locations in the Southeast, plans to open six stores in Huntsville as part of its local strategy. This follows its late 2024 openings in Fort Payne and Owens Cross Roads, further solidifying its presence in north Alabama.
